Bengals Week 2 Report Card

The Cincinnati Enquirer
Rush offense, A: The Bengals ran for 156 yards on 31 carries, a 5-yard average. Corey Dillon had 22 carries for 108 yards, but the Bengals dropped to 17-10 when Dillon has at least 22 rushing attempts.
Pass offense, D: Gus Frerotte threw three interceptions, including one on the game-changing play on third-and-5 at the Cleveland 17-yard line. At the very least, the Bengals should have trailed 10-3 at halftime. Instead it was 17-0. Frerotte was sacked five times, but had 239 passing yards and a touchdown.
Rush defense, A: The Bengals' front seven held the Browns to a 2.8-yard average and three first downs rushing.
Pass defense, C-minus: The NFL paid tribute to Johnny Unitas before the game, and the Bengals let journeyman QB Kelly Holcomb play like Unitas. Holcomb had 198 yards passing and two touchdowns, and was sacked just once. For the second week in a row, the Bengals failed to intercept a pass.
Special teams, D-plus: Nick Harris punted well, dropping two kicks inside the 20. Neil Rackers did not, dropping the snap on a first-quarter pooch punt and netting minus-2 yards. Bengals punt returners let too many balls hit in front of them and had just 2 yards in returns. The Bengals also averaged a measly 11.3 yards on four kickoff returns.
Coaching, D: The team played hard this week, so credit Dick LeBeau for that. But his call for Rackers' pooch punt was a bad one; just let Harris punt, or let Rackers try a 52-yard field goal. There was no wind, and he made a 54-yarder last week.
The positive postgame spin was a surprise. The Bengals lost. They scored seven points against a team that allowed 40 last week. They're 0-2. And only the Ravens have scored fewer points this season.
