Levi Jones' Rookie Journal

Each Sunday, Bengals first-round draft pick Levi Jones talks about life as an NFL rookie.

They got me into this tight end look to give a lift to the blocking game, to help free up Corey Dillon a little bit.

It's no big deal to me. It's what they ask me to do, and any way I can help the team out, I will. If it gets me on the field more, I'm all for it. I want to play. I love to play.

I was out there at tight end three or four times against San Diego, and it was supposed to be a lot more. The running game didn't take off. We had to go to the spread formation and try to play catch-up.

I got some time at left tackle; I got three snaps at the end of the game. The first play I was in there, I gave up a sack to Adrian Dingle. In that game, there wasn't much anybody can be proud of, from a Cincinnati standpoint. But you have to roll with the punches.

On the sack, some say the quarterback stepped up. Some say I had sat the whole half. But I gave up the sack. I should have blocked him longer. I should have stayed on him. There are a number of things I could have done better. I'm going to take that one right on the forehead. That's all you can do. At the end of the day, there's a check on the sack list under the name Levi Jones.

I've just got to concentrate. When I'm at tight end, I've got to play tight end. When I'm at left tackle, I have to play left tackle.

It's an experience for us all. (Losing) was bad, but if we don't get our running game going, this is what happens; we get 14 plays in the first half.

We kept our defense out there a lot longer than it should be. We have to get the running game established so we can get into some of the things we want to do to exploit defenses. We want to get Corey over the 150-yard mark.

Just being a man, (last week's game) was disappointing. I'm sure a lot of people will make excuses. But they won. They beat us. But we didn't give ourselves a chance.

San Diego is out of our mind. Cleveland is in our mind.

This is a game of execution. This week we'll hopefully transfer what we're doing in practice to the game and get 28 (Dillon) running. That's what we're going to focus on.
