Farmer out 3-5 weeks

Receiver hurts knee in practice

The Associated Press

Bengals receiver Danny Farmer partially tore a ligament in his left knee during practice Wednesday and will be out 3-5 weeks.

Farmer had a 51-yard catch-and-run during a season-opening 34-6 defeat against San Diego. It was the Bengals' longest reception in nearly three years.

He hurt the knee and hit the ground hard during a one-on-one drill early in practice. A magnetic resonance imaging test found that he had damaged a ligament, but surgery won't be needed.

The team's trainer, Paul Sparling, said Farmer will be out for at least three weeks, but more likely will be sidelined until late October. The Bengals have their bye week on Oct. 20.

“He could be lost until the bye week,” Sparling said. “Anything sooner than that will be a bonus.”

Farmer was the Pittsburgh Steelers' fourth-round pick in 2000. The Bengals claimed him off waivers that season, and he started two games.

He played sparingly last season, starting once and making 15 catches for 228 yards in 12 games overall. He also sprained his ankle, causing him to miss two games.

A pulled hamstring slowed him in training camp. He had two catches for 54 yards against the Chargers, including a 51-yard play that was the Bengals' longest reception since the 14th game of the 1999 season.

“If you prepare well enough, you're not going to have poor plays,” quarterback Gus Frerotte said Wednesday. “You're going to have things go well. That's with me, that's with everybody. Danny prepares himself very well.”
