Chargers' Jammer ready to sit out season

The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Cornerback Quentin Jammer is ready to sit out the season rather than accept the San Diego Chargers' contract offer, the player's agent said.

Jammer, the fifth pick overall in April's draft, is seeking a deal that would pay $13.5 million during the first three seasons. The Chargers are offering $12.6 million.

Defensive tackle Ryan Sims, taken by Kansas City with the sixth pick, signed last week for a reported $13 million in the first three seasons.

“He's not going to take less than pick six,” agent Mike Sullivan said. “If they refuse, we really don't have any choice” but to sit out. “From our perspective, it appears that it's been proven we've been asking for a fair deal all along.”

The agent said he's prepared to line up a personal trainer and a coach to work with Jammer if he sits out the season and re-enters the draft next year. Jammer is the highest unsigned draft pick.

The Chargers, who've lost 26 of their last 32 games, envisioned Jammer as a starter when they drafted him out of Texas.

Chargers general manager John Butler was curt while discussing Jammer on Thursday, saying that “nothing whatsoever” was going on in the negotiations.

“I don't care about that,” Butler said about Jammer's threat to sit out the season. “I have no response to that.”
