Reeves says Vick will play Thursday
By GEORGE HENRY
Associated Press Writer
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. Quarterback Michael Vick's bruised right elbow will not keep him from playing in the Atlanta Falcons' preseason finale against Cincinnati.
Vick, a left-handed passer, did not return after getting sacked in the second quarter of a 21-19 win at Dallas on Saturday night. X-rays taken at Texas Stadium were negative.
The Falcons play the Bengals on Thursday night.
The doctor said he could've played last night, but the nerves ... he didn't get the feeling back in it, coach Dan Reeves said Sunday. So he's OK.
The Falcons have built their offense around Vick, a first-year starter who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2001.
Trainer Ron Medlin wrapped Vick's elbow in ice Sunday morning and told him to go home and rest.
Vick went 3-of-6 for 17 yards and scrambled once for a first down against the Cowboys. He was not sacked in the first two preseason games, but he went down twice Saturday.
The second sack, a double hit by defensive ends Greg Ellis and Ebenezer Ekuban, forced an early exit.
I just took a shot to my elbow, Vick said after the game. It was a blessing that it happened to my non-throwing arm.
Notes: Starting right tackle Todd Weiner, who missed the game with a bruised left shoulder, likely won't be ready by Thursday. ... Outside linebacker John Thierry, who has practiced just once since fracturing his fibula on the third day of training camp, hopes to return this week. ... Defensive end Travis Hall is nursing a sore abdomen and a groin pull that's kept him out since the first full week of camp. ... Inside linebacker Mark Simoneau has an injured groin and could miss his second straight game. ... X-rays taken on kickoff returner Darrick Vaughn's ankle were negative. Reeves said backup receivers Alvis Whitted and Travis McGriff will replace Vaughn if he can't play.
