Fun 'N' Gun batters Bucs

Redskins 40, Bucs 10

The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. — Shane Matthews threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Rod Gardner, and Greg Scott returned a fumble 66 yards for another TD as Washington beat Tampa Bay in Steve Spurrier's return to the state where he is revered as a coach.

LaVar Arrington and Champ Bailey intercepted passes by Brad Johnson on the Bucs' (2-1) first two possessions, the latter setting up Matthews' TD pass to Gardner. Donte Curry intercepted Shaun King and ran 20 yards for Washington's last TD with 2:31 remaining in the game.

Rookie Patrick Ramsey made his Redskins (4-0) debut at quarterback in the second half and threw a 12-yard TD pass to ex-Buc Jacquez Green.

        Broncos 19, Cardinals 13

TEMPE, Ariz. — Denver had to overcome four turnovers, three of them fumbles by rookie running back Clinton Portis, in a preseason victory over Arizona.

Two of Portis' fumbles led to Arizona's first 10 points. The third ended a long Broncos' drive at the Cardinals' 11-yard line.

Despite a huge advantage in total yards, Denver led only 13-10 when its first unit left the game late in the third quarter.

Brian Griese completed 22 of 32 passes for 227 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception.

Along with three first-half turnovers, Denver failed to score on fourth-and-goal from the Arizona 1-yard line and missed a conversion kick.

The Cardinals' Thomas Jones had his first encouraging performance of the preseason, gaining 65 yards in 20 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run. Jake Plummer completed 8 of 16 passes for 73 yards.

        Seahawks 17, Chiefs 14

SEATTLE — Matt Hasselback passed for his first touchdown of the preseason in the first half as Seattle beat Kansas City.

Dilfer was lost for 4-to-8 weeks in the Seahawks' exhibition opener with a sprained right knee. Seattle (1-2) isn't sure if he'll be ready for its regular-season opener Sept. 8 in Oakland.

The Seahawks led 10-0 at halftime after Kansas City (2-1) quarterback Trent Green threw three interceptions in the second quarter.

Green was picked off by free safety Curtis Fuller twice and also by linebacker Marcus Bell.

Hasselbeck threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Jackson in the second period. He played the entire first half and completed 8 of 13 passes for 74 yards with no interceptions. He was intercepted three times and lost a fumble in Seattle's first two exhibition games.

        Colts 19, Bills 7

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis starters needed 3:07 to produce their first touchdown of the preseason, then settled for four field goals by Mike Vanderjagt in a victory over Buffalo. It was Tony Dungy's first home win since taking over the Colts in January.

About the only element of one of the NFL's highest-scoring offenses that appeared in synch was the Peyton Manning-to-Marvin Harrison connection. Manning completed 12 of 23 passes for 104 yards, while Harrison caught eight passes for 74 yards.

The Colts gained just 50 yards rushing as Edgerrin James, the NFL's two-time rushing champ, sat out for the third straight week.

The Colts had just 217 total yards on offense and Buffalo only 228, including a minus-7 yards rushing in the first quarter. The Bills committed 16 penalties for 97 yards.

        Raiders 17, 49ers 10

OAKLAND, Calif. — Madre Hill ran 15 yards for a touchdown with 7:19 left as Oakland beat San Francisco before thousands of empty seats at the Coliseum.

Bill Callahan's home debut as the Raiders' 13th head coach was considerably better than Oakland's (1-2) first two preseason games.

San Francisco (1-3) managed just 80 total yards in the first half, with Jeff Garcia completing just 8 of 16 passes for 60 yards and failing to get San Francisco into the end zone yet again.

Rich Gannon completed 13 of 20 passes for 88 yards. Jerry Rice, in his second game against the team for which he set every significant NFL receiving mark, caught four passes for 50 yards.

Sebastian Janikowski missed field goals from 36 and 33 yards in the first half for Oakland.

        Jets 28, Giants 7

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Jets won their seventh straight exhibition meeting with their local rival Giants. After building a 7-0 halftime lead, they overwhelmed the undermanned Giants.

Vinny Testaverde threw for one touchdown and backup Chad Pennington hit Santana Moss and Kevin Swayne for scores after the weather improved in the second half.

The Jets' first-string offense scored on their opening drive for the third straight game, going 60 yards on 12 plays, with Richie Anderson finishing it off with a 16-yard reception.

Giants running back Tiki Barber had 96 yards on 13 carries but left in the second quater with an injured hamstring. He fumbled at the end of a magnificent 54-yard run and walked off the field with a trainer.

        Dolphins 24, Texans 3

HOUSTON — Ricky Williams scored the first touchdown in the first game played in Houtson's new stadium and Miami beat the Texans.

Regardless of the outcome, it was an exciting return of pro football to the city, which hadn't hosted a pro game since the Oilers lost to Cincinnati on Dec. 15, 1996 before moving to Tennessee.

The Texans (1-3) didn't have too many bright moments in their debut in their $449 million retractable-roof stadium.

The Dolphins (1-2) sacked Texans rookie quarterback David Carr four times, including three times in the second quarter. He played three quarters and threw two interceptions, one setting up a late third-quarter touchdown run of 1-yard by Robert Edwards.

Carr completed 6-of-15 for 69 yards in his roughest outing of the exhibition season.

Williams had a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:20 left in the first quarter. He finished with 50 yards on 15 carries first half.

        Falcons 21, Cowboys 19

IRVING, Texas — Both Atlanta's Michael Vick and Dallas' Quincy Carter left after taking jarring hits on which they were sandwiched by defenders in a preseason game won by the Falcons.

Cowboys rookie kicker Billy Cundiff, getting an extended tryout in his attempt to beat out incumbent Tim Seder, missed a 22-yard field goal with three seconds left when his kick hit off the crossbar. Cundiff made field goals of 46 and 25 yards in the first half, when he also was wide right on a 44-yard attempt.

After replacing Vick, Doug Johnson threw two TD passes, including a 41-yarder to Alvis Whitted with 14:11 left that put the Falcons ahead to stay at 14-13. Rookie Kurt Kittner added a 30-yard scoring pass to tight end Brian Kozlowski with 8:20 left.

Carter was hurt with about nine minutes left in the third quarter and Vick, who was expected to play the entire first half, was limited to just two series, bruising his right elbow with about 13 minutes left in the second quarter.

Rookie Woody Dantzler, who was a quarterback at Clemson, returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.
