Adams signs with Raiders
The Associated Press
NAPA, Calif. - Sam Adams, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman who was pursued by the Bengals, agreed to a multiyear deal with the Oakland Raiders. He was in training camp Monday as the Raiders held their next-to-last day of workouts.
This is exactly where I needed to be, said Adams. It's the Oakland Raiders. What more do you need to say? I'm glad they gave me a chance.
Adams, who helped Baltimore win the 2001 Super Bowl after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, was released by the Ravens last spring in a huge salary purge.
Both of Adams' former teams attempted to lure him back this month, while Denver and the Bengals also entered the bidding. But Adams was insulted by what he perceived as the low-ball offers made to his agents.
The Bengals offered Adams a three-year deal reportedly worth approximately $8.5 million.
BEARS: Chicago signed offensive guard Rex Tucker to a seven-year contract and reserve defensive tackle Alfonso Boone to a five-year deal.
BILLS: Defensive end Chidi Ahanotu agreed to a one-year deal with Buffalo. Ahanotu is a nine-year veteran who played for the St.Louis Rams last season, and he will immediately bolster an inexperienced line.
BROWNS: One preseason game is all Darren Hambrick needed to convince Cleveland he could fill Jamir Miller's shoes at strongside linebacker. Hambrick practiced with the Browns' first-team defense this week.
Hambrick signed as a free agent last week after Miller, the Browns' Pro Bowl linebacker, tore an Achilles' tendon in the exhibition opener against Minnesota and was lost for the year.
COLTS: With starter Edgerrin James still on the mend from reconstructive knee surgery, top backup Dominic Rhodes and rookie Brian Allen out for the year with knee injuries, and reserve Shyrone Stith nursing a sore knee, Indianapolis signed ex-Colorado State tailback Kevin McDougal and former Army player Michael Wallace.
COWBOYS: Richmond Flowers, the singing receiver prominently featured on HBO's series about Dallas' training camp, was one of four players cut. Defensive end Dwayne Missouri, safety Travis Ortega and cornerback Shad Criss also were released.
SEAHAWKS: Seattle signed veteran quarterback Mark Rypien to help fill in for Trent Dilfer, who is injured. Dilfer is expected to be sidelined 4-to-8 weeks with a knee ailment, and Matt Hasselbeck is the starter. Rypien is 39 years old.
