Takeo Spikes sidelined with chest injury

The Associated Press

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Linebacker Takeo Spikes slightly tore a muscle in his chest during the Cincinnati Bengals' first preseason game and could be sidelined for a couple of weeks.

Spikes got hurt while sacking Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe in the first quarter of the Bengals' 24-17 victory on Friday night. The injury wasn't initially considered serious.

Trainer Paul Sparling said Sunday that Spikes has partially torn a muscle and will need two to four weeks to recover fully.

Spikes was optimistic that he could be doing noncontact drills by the end of the week.

“I caught Bledsoe and I slipped off him and he was falling,” Spikes said. “I was trying to go for the extra effort and pick him up and trying to dump him, and then I just felt like a catch in my chest.”
