Potential unfulfilled, Seahawks' Leaf retires

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

CHENEY, Wash. - Ryan Leaf has retired, ending a career that began in 1998 when he was the No.2 overall draft pick and considered one of the NFL's most promising young quarterbacks.

Leaf did not report to the Seahawks' training camp Thursday, when quarterbacks were due to report to the team's facility at Eastern Washington University.

Team spokesman Dave Pearson said Friday that Leaf told the Seahawks he is quitting.

In four seasons, Leaf appeared in 25 games, making 21 starts. He completed 317 of 655 passes for 3,666 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. He had a dismal quarterback rating of 50.

Seahawks coach and general manager Mike Holmgren was not available for comment Friday.

COWBOYS: Dallas signed No.1 pick Roy Williams and will have all nine of its drafted rookies on the field for its first practice. Other players signed Friday were center/offensive guard Andre Gurode, receiver Antonio Bryant and cornerback Derek Ross.

BROWNS: Running back Autry Denson signed a one-year contract Friday with Cleveland, which is still waiting for first-round pick William Green to agree to terms and report to camp.

BUCCANEERS: Tampa Bay signed five draft picks Friday: wide receiver Marquise Walker, defensive end John Stamper, receiver Aaron Lockett, center/ guard Zack Quaccia and running back Travis Stephens.

REDSKINS: Japanese receiver Akihito Amaya joined the Redskins on Friday, signing a 10-day contract as a sort of goodwill ambassador for next weekend's American Bowl.

DOLPHINS: Miami has begun talking with agents for running back Ricky Williams about a new contract.

Team officials met for about an hour Thursday with agents Leigh Steinberg, Jeff Moorad and Warren Moon, the former NFL quarterback.

LIONS: Detroit opened its new $36million practice facility Friday, hoping to forget its 0-12 start and 2-14 finish in its first season under coach Marty Mornhinweg and president Matt Millen.

COLTS: Defensive tackle Larry Tripplett, the Colts' second-round draft pick, signed a four-year contract.

PATRIOTS: New England re-signed defensive lineman Riddick Parker and released linebacker Marty Moore.

SAINTS: Former Georgia defensive end Charles Grant, the second player picked by the Saints in the draft, agreed to a five-year deal.

FALCONS: T.J. Duckett, the team's top draft pick, missed his second day of training camp Friday because of a contract dispute.

RAVENS: Defensive end Anthony Weaver agreed in principle to a four-year deal.

JETS: Safety Jon McGraw signed Friday.
