Who has the edge? Kitna
Here's how The Enquirer's Mark Curnutte handicaps the Bengals QB race:
Kitna: 3-1. His I'm-the-guy attitude can only help. Don't discount his resolve to rebound from the difficult year he endured (22 INTs, 12 TD passes) with the team's wide receivers, as well as the promise they showed in compiling 751 yards passing in the last two games. The breakdowns in the pass offense weren't all Kitna's fault.
Frerotte: 4-1. He has a great deal of NFL experience but is still in his prime at age 31. He has better arm strength than Kitna and will play and possibly start if Kitna falters in the preseason or September games. LeBeau won't hesitate to use Frerotte; he has 61 NFL starts. The race between Nos.1 and 2 is almost too close to call at this time.
Smith: 10-1. First, he has to show he is fully recovered from the torn hamstring that required surgery, even after getting medical clearance. He also has to consistently show the maturity and pocket decisiveness he displayed in his impressive start against the Jets. The Bengals can't afford to give up on him yet, so he will always have a chance to play.
