The Bengals ended their 14-session voluntary May workouts Friday at the practice fields next to Paul Brown Stadium, and coach Dick LeBeau said he was happy with his team's work.
We're together, LeBeau said. That's what these things are good for. We got to know each other.
The Bengals next will report for training camp July25 at Georgetown College. The first workout is July 26.
WAIVED: The Bengals waived rookie free agent tackle Derrick Johnson from Kentucky.
He had signed with the Bengals on April23.
READY: Quarterback Akili Smith and cornerback Rodney Heath, both recovering from hamstring surgery last season, are expected to be cleared in time to participate 100 percent at the start of training camp.
Cornerback Artrell Hawkins, who tore a knee ligament in voluntary workouts, also is expected to be healed in time for training camp.
NFL notes
PACKERS: Running back Jason Brookins, recently released by the Baltimore Ravens, agreed to a two-year contract with Green Bay.
Brookins, 26, carried 151 times for 551 yards and five touchdowns last season. He will compete for the backup tailback job behind Ahman Green. The Packers auditioned several veterans for the job, including former Bengal Ki-Jana Carter.
PATRIOTS: Former University of Texas quarterback Major Applewhite, who signed a free agent contract with New England, says he is giving up his NFL dreams to pursue a career as a coach.
Texas' career passing leader, Applewhite was considered a marginal NFL prospect. He was not drafted despite setting 48 UT passing records, although he spent most of his senior season as a backup to Chris Simms.
