Sore leg may sideline Scott

Bengals receiver probably will miss minicamp

By Mark Curnutte mcurnutte@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Darnay Scott is likely to miss the Bengals' minicamp this weekend after experiencing soreness in his left leg.

Scott, a ninth-year wide receiver who broke his left leg in training camp 2000, reported to the team's medical staff last week that his left shin was hurting during sprints.

Scott discontinued his workouts and saw his own doctor in St. Louis, where he lives in the offseason. He is now receiving treatment.

Scott, who will be 30 in July and is entering the final season of a five-year contract, will arrive in Cincinnati later this week and undergo a series of examinations, including an MRI on the leg.

Minicamp will open Friday night with a team meeting at Paul Brown Stadium. Then the team will practice four times over the course of the next three days.

“We won't put him on the field until we do additional diagnoses and the symptoms have been resolved,” Bengals trainer Paul Sparling said Tuesday.

The coaching staff released the minicamp depth chart Tuesday morning and Scott is listed as the starter at one wide receiver spot, ahead of second-year players Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Scott started 15 games and played in all 16 last season, after missing the entire 2000 season after breaking both bones in his lower left leg.

He had 57 receptions for 819 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Bengals in receiving yards and average at 14.4. Scott's best game was the season finale at Tennessee, where he had nine catches for 152 yards. The week before, in the Bengals' upset of Pittsburgh, Scott had 113 yards on seven receptions.

The Bengals finished 2001 ranked No.23 in pass offense with a 193-yard average, but Scott's return played a part in an improvement of eight places in the NFL rankings from the 2000 season and an increase of 70 yards a game.
