Frerotte accepts one-year deal

The Bengals reached agreement on a one-year contract today with free-agent quarterback Gus Frerotte.
Bengals executive Troy Blackburn and Frerotte's agent, Marvin Demoff, were still hammering out details late this afternoon, but Blackburn said the two sides had agreed in principle on an incentive-laden deal. No details of the deal were available, but the incentives will be tied to playing time and to individual and team performance, said Blackburn.
Blackburn said Frerotte wanted a one-year contract because he wanted to see how much playing time he would get with the Bengals.
Frerotte, 30, had been a backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos the last two seasons. Last offseason, the Bengals also pursued Frerotte and offered him a four-year deal, similar to the one Jon Kitna accepted.
Now Kitna and Frerotte will be competing to be the Bengals' starter, coach Dick LeBeau has said. The Bengals pursued Frerotte because they have concerns about the health of quarterback Akili Smith's hamstring, which required surgery in December.
Frerotte started one game last season when Broncos starter Brian Griese was out with a separated shoulder. Frerotte separated his shoulder in that game and had surgery.
In other news, the Bengals released safety Darryl Williams, who was in his second stint with the team.
