Gus Frerotte's agent made a counteroffer to the Bengals on Tuesday that the club thinks is too high for the free-agent quarterback.
Agent Marvin Demoff proposed a three-year contract worth roughly $12 million, Bengals executive Troy Blackburn said Tuesday night.
The Bengals' initial offer was a reported $2.6 million over three years with annual incentives that could pay an additional $1 million, ESPN.com reported Monday.
We will be flexible, said Blackburn, Bengals director of business development. It could be one year. It could be a multi-season deal.
Demoff did not return a call to his Los Angeles office. Frerotte visited the Bengals last week and was told by coach Dick LeBeau that he could compete with Jon Kitna for the starting job.
