Quarterback Gus Frerotte will visit the Bengals today, team officials said Tuesday.
The Bengals didn't draft a quarterback last weekend but seek better production out of the position. Last season, starter Jon Kitna threw 12 touchdowns but 22 interceptions.
Frerotte is entering his ninth NFL season. He has played for Washington, Detroit and Denver and last offseason was courted by the Bengals. Frerotte was not given a guarantee he would start here, so he opted to return to the Broncos.
Frerotte, who ended last season on injured reserve after separating his shoulder in December, will undergo a physical examination and might throw a little bit, during his visit, player personnel director Jim Lippincott said.
The Bengals can add Frerotte to a growing list of quarterbacks the team has talked to in recent months. Elvis Grbac turned down a $10 million offer in favor of retirement; Trent Dilfer re-signed with Seattle, and Sunday, Drew Bledsoe was traded from New England to Buffalo.
Frerotte, meanwhile, hasn't started more than six games in a season since 1997. That year, he started 13 games for Washington. Since then, Frerotte, 30, has searched for starting roles.
Last year with Denver, Frerotte backed up Brian Griese and played in four games, throwing for 308 yards and three TDs. He started one game (vs. Kansas City) but suffered his shoulder injury.
Lippincott said Frerotte doesn't need a guarantee that he will start. He just needs an opportunity.
I think that's what he's looking for, he said. As long as you give him the opportunity, (he'll) be satisfied.
