Rocky Boiman can't wait until this weekend.
Boiman, a linebacker at Notre Dame and a graduate of St. Xavier High, is expecting to be selected during the NFL draft in New York.
But the process leading up to Saturday workouts, meetings, seminars, medical exams and skill tests has been exhausting.
You kind of want it to be over with, Boiman said from his parents' home in Ross. You just want to find out who you're going to play for.
Boiman is one of several area football players who can expect to receive a phone call this weekend.
Jerry Jones, publisher of the Drugstore List, said Boiman will get a call, but he probably will have to wait until Sunday. Rounds one through three are Saturday, rounds four through seven Sunday. Jones said Boiman, an outside linebacker, should be selected in the sixth round.
As a co-captain for Notre Dame last season, Boiman had 42 tackles and was second on the team with four sacks.
Jones said Highlands High grad Derek Smith, a junior tight end out of Kentucky, should be drafted in round three or four. He is ranked No.27 on ESPN's list of tight ends.
He didn't run as fast as they thought he could run, Jones said. But he's proved to be very good. He does need to work on his blocking.
At the University of Cincinnati, punter Adam Wulfeck (Beechwood) is well-regarded among college punters, but because teams rarely draft punters and kickers, he probably will sign as a free agent. Jones said UC running back Ray Jackson and cornerback LaVar Glover also will become free agent signees.
