NFL: Dallas, Hardy close to deal

Enquirer news services

DALLAS — Negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville free-agent linebacker Kevin Hardy have heated up again.

According to a source, the two sides could agree to a deal in the next few days.

Hardy, who had been seeking a multiyear contract, apparently has lessened his demands because of questions about his left knee, which he injured last season, and a dried-up market.

The Cowboys, the only team actively pursuing the seven-year veteran, are working on a one-year deal with an option for a second year based on his performance.

If he signs, Hardy would join defensive tackle La'Roi Glover and cornerback Bryant Westbrook as the Cowboys' major off-season free-agent acquisitions.

DOLPHINS: Punter Mark Royals agreed to contract terms with Miami, his seventh NFL team.

The Dolphins made Royals an offer when they were unable to re-sign Matt Turk, their punter the past two seasons.

“We wanted to get something wrapped up by now so that we wouldn't get shut out,” Dolphins senior vice president Rick Spielman said.

Royals punted last season for Tampa Bay and averaged 40.7 yards, 27th in the league. Turk averaged 41.0.

Royals also has kicked for Philadelphia, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit and New Orleans. He qualifies for the veteran salary of $750,000 that counts only $450,000 against the salary cap.

Like Turk, Royals held for field goals last season.
