Cardinals receiver Boston investigated for drunken driving

The Associated Press

PHOENIX — Arizona Cardinals wide receiver David Boston is being investigated by police for possible drunken driving.

Boston was taken into custody Wednesday night after “performing very poorly” during a field sobriety test at his home, Phoenix detective Tony Morales said Thursday.

Morales said police went to Boston's home after two people called 911 and said they had followed a car there that they thought was being driven by someone impaired.

After talking to his lawyer, Boston submitted to a blood test at a police substation, Morales said, and then was released. Morales said Boston was not arrested or cited but remains under investigation.

Boston made it to the Pro Bowl last season after leading the NFC in yards receiving with a Cardinals-record 1,598.

EAGLES: Free agent Blaine Bishop, a four-time Pro Bowl safety, signed a three-year contract. Other details were not revealed.

Bishop, 5 feet 9 but a fierce hitter, became a free agent when the Titans released him last month to meet the salary cap deadline. He was due to count $5.8 million against the cap this season.

Bishop made the Pro Bowl from 1995 through 1997 and again in 2000. In 126 career games, he has 788 tackles, 14 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, 11 fumble recoveries, 48 pass deflections and five interceptions.

        • Now that Philadelphia has pulled out of the running for free agent running back Warrick Dunn, Duce Staley probably will return next season. Staley, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher, is due to receive a $500,000 bonus if he's on the roster today.

Had the Eagles signed Dunn, who is considering going to Atlanta or staying with Tampa Bay, Staley probably would have been traded or released by today.

Staley's agent, Brantley Evans, did not return phone messages Thursday.

Staley is coming off his least productive rushing season: He ran 166 times for 604 yards, an average of 3.6 yards a carry, but had a career-best 63 receptions for 626 yards. A shoulder injury that forced him to miss two games and the emergence of rookie running back Correll Buckhalter limited Staley's carries.

SEAHAWKS: The team signed tight end Itula Mili to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed.

Mili has 41 catches for 430 yards and six touchdowns during his five NFL seasons. He started 13 of the 55 games he has played.

CHIEFS: The team retained restricted free agent linebacker Mike Maslowski by matching the offer sheet he signed with New England. The Chiefs did not release details of the offer, but New England had made Maslowski a one-year offer.

Maslowski, a four-season NFL veteran, had 59 tackles and two sacks last season while battling knee injuries last season.

PATRIOTS: Linebacker Ted Johnson will remain with the team after rejecting an offer from Green Bay and opting for a large pay cut to stay with New England.

Johnson was scheduled to earn $3.5 million next season, but the team would have released him if he hadn't agreed to restructure his contract. He agreed to accept the $650,000 veteran's minimum and will be paid a $1 million roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus. The $1.75 million total was more than Green Bay was willing to offer.

Johnson, a second-round pick in 1995, has been plagued by injuries and missed four games last year. By the end of the season he was healthy, but he'd been replaced by Tedy Bruschi as a starter, and his play was limited to short yardage situations and special teams.
