Former safety interviewed for Bengals job
Played with LeBeau
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Former Pittsburgh and New Orleans safety Darren Perry, who interviewed Wednesday with Bengals coach Dick LeBeau for an assistant coaching job, took a year off to see if he wanted to coach.
After playing the 2000 season with the Saints, where coach Jim Haslett first suggested Perry become a coach, Perry returned to his native Virginia and worked as a contractor building houses.
He played for LeBeau in Pittsburgh, and they stayed in touch over the years.
Even as a player, I took a lot of pride in being a student of the game, said Perry, who has a management degree from Penn State. I've had a lot of information passed on to me by some great coaches, and I want to pass that on.
Perry, 33, is one of three candidates LeBeau said he plans on interviewing. LeBeau is looking to replace Ray Horton, who coached safeties last season but resigned Jan.7.
