Vikes' QB duties fall to Wynn
Former 3rd-stringer to start vs. Packers
The Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS Spergon Wynn will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.
The team said Friday that Wynn will fill in for Todd Bouman, unable to grip the ball since straining a ligament in his right thumb against Detroit Dec.16.
Bouman started the past three weeks in place of the Vikings regular Daunte Culpepper, who injured his knee Nov.25 and hasn't played since Dec.2. But Bouman played for only one series last Sunday against Jacksonville after aggravating his sore thumb. Wynn came in and completed 24 of 39 passes for 218 yards and threw one interception.
Wynn, 23, a second-year player from Southwest Texas State, will make the second NFL start of his career. He played his rookie season in Cleveland, where he appeared in seven games and started one. The Vikings acquired Wynn in a trade Sept.3.
Last week, Bouman didn't practice much until Friday, but Vikings coach Dennis Green still started him against the Jaguars. This week, Green decided earlier to give Wynn the nod so the offense would have more practice time with him in the lead.
Green said Thursday if Bouman didn't start he should be healthy enough to be Wynn's backup against the Packers. Rookie Romaro Miller, signed last week, is the third-string quarterback.
TITANS:
Quarterback Steve McNair was excused from practice because of an illness in his family.
McNair practiced Thursday for the first time in nearly two weeks and left almost immediately after practice to catch a flight to Mississippi. Coach Jeff Fisher said he expects McNair to return Saturday. today.
The Titans play Cleveland Sunday. McNair is questionable for the game because of a sore back but is expected to start.
DOLPHINS:
Quarterback Jay Fiedler, who has a sore throwing elbow, was listed as questionable on the team's injured list but is expected to start against Atlanta Sunday.
It was a little sore (Thursday), so we added him to the list, Wannstedt said. But he was able to take all the snaps in practice (Friday).
Fiedler has completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,989 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
SAINTS:
Two arrest warrants were issued for suspended wide receiver Albert Connell for allegedly stealing more than $4,000 from teammate Deuce McAllister.
The first warrant alleges $863 was taken from McAllister's locker Dec.5, and the second alleges $3,500 was taken from the running back's car Dec.9, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.
Connell, who has a $14 million contract, was suspended Dec.19 for the rest of the season, although the team refused to say why. If convicted, Connell faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $3,000 fine.
The Saints began an internal investigation after McAllister found money missing and reported it to the team.
Connell's agent, Peter Schaffer, has refused to describe what caused the suspension except to say that it was the typical kind of thing a veteran would do to a rookie.
