Bengals Report Card

Jets 15, Bengals 14

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Rush offense, B: The Bengals had their most productive game with 120 yards of the six-game losing streak. They gained nine first downs on the ground, and Corey Dillon ran for two touchdowns On the opening drive, the Bengals ran for first downs twice on third down and once on fourth down.

Pass offense, D: The Bengals passed for 128 yards, fourth worst this season. In relief of starter Akili Smith, Jon Kitna threw three more interceptions and has 17 for the season. One was meaningless on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half, but the others came after the Bengals had fallen behind 15-14 in the fourth quarter. Kitna intimated after the game that the receivers weren't where they were supposed to be on routes.

Rush defense, B: Jets tailback Curtis Martin was held to 78 yards and a 3.3-yard average, well below the 4.6 he had coming in. Just five of New York's 17 first downs came on the ground.

Pass defense, D: Six times, Vinny Testaverde completed third down passes for first downs with 10 or more yards to go. Both Jets' touchdowns were on third-down passes to tight ends. The Bengals had no sacks and little quarterback pressure.

Special teams, C: No big mistakes. No big plays, either.

Coaching, C: The team is still playing hard. The last three losses are by a combined eight points. Dick LeBeau won't accept moral victories, which is good. Big problems remain with the offensive staff, which coaches a unit that has averaged 9.5 points in the six-game losing streak and is falling further behind as the league's least productive at 13.6 a game.
