Special teams highs and lows
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Like the Bengals' offense, their special teams have been inconsistent. The highlights and lowlights through 11 games:
HIGH: On Sept. 9, in the Bengals' 23-17 victory over the Patriots, Neil Rackers is 3-for-3 on field goals, and Curtis Keaton's 64-yard kickoff return sets up a field goal.
LOW: On Sept. 23, in the Bengals' 21-10 victory over the Ravens, Rackers misses all three of his field-goal attempts. Peter Warrick fumbles a punt deep in Bengals' territory to set up the Ravens' only touchdown.
HIGH: On Sept. 30, in the Bengals' 28-14 loss at San Diego, Rackers executes a successful onside kickoff.
LOW: On Oct. 14, in the Bengals' 24-14 victory over the Browns, Nick Harris' 18-yard punt gives the Browns the ball on the Bengals' 30-yard line, setting up a touchdown. Rackers misses a 22-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
LOW: On Oct. 21, in the Bengals' 24-0 loss to the Bears, Harris' 29-yard punt sets up the Bear's first score, a field goal. Rackers misses his only field-goal attempt, from 39 yards. Keaton averages less than 20 yards a kickoff return.
LOW: On Oct. 28, in the Bengals' 31-27 victory at Detroit, the Lions' Desmond Howard has 247 yards in kickoff returns, including consecutive returns totaling 156 yards that let Detroit back into the game.
HIGH: On Nov. 11, in the Bengals' 30-13 loss at Jacksonville, Rackers makes a 52-yard field goal on the last play of the first half that gives the Bengals a 13-7 lead and should give them enough momentum to win. Warrick makes two outstanding fair catches of high, wind-blown punts in the second quarter around the 40-yard line to give the Bengals excellent field position. Punter Harris averages 46.7 yards
LOW: On Nov. 18, in the Bengals 20-7 loss to the Titans, a tired Tennessee team gets the lift it needs after a Monday night loss when Derrick Mason returns Rackers' opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown. With Rackers struggling, coach Dick LeBeau decides three times to bypass field-goal attempts of 50 yards or less.
HIGH: On Nov. 25, in the Bengals' 18-0 loss at Cleveland, T.J. Houshmandzadeh returns a punt 86 yards to set up the Bengals best scoring chance of the day, but Rackers misses two field goals in the first half.
LOW: On Dec. 2, in the Bengals' 16-13 overtime loss to the Buccaneers, Tampa Bay scores it only touchdown when Ronde Barber blocks a Harris punt, which is returned 11 yards by Todd Yoder.
