Jax waves Whitted

Jaguars give up on speedy receiver

By EDDIE PELLS
AP Sports Writer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars waived receiver Alvis Whitted on Wednesday, a move made because of salary-cap and injury concerns, as well as Whitted's lack of productivity.

The Jaguars replaced Whitted with linebacker Joe Wesley. Middle linebacker Kevin Hardy (knee) is listed as questionable, and outside linebacker T.J. Slaughter (knee) is out for Sunday's game against Cincinnati.

By cutting Whitted, a four-year veteran, and replacing him with Wesley, a second-year player, the Jaguars will save about only $80,000 under the cap over the rest of the season. But coach Tom Coughlin said their cap is so tight that every dollar counts.

“Every week we have to look at some financial considerations to meet our needs,” Coughlin said. “This week we have problems with the linebacker situation. I can't project how it's all going to work out.”

Coughlin conceded that Whitted might still be on the roster had he not dropped a catchable ball on third-and-12 on Jacksonville's final drive in a 28-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday. Mark Brunell fumbled the next play to essentially end the game.

A seventh-round pick out of North Carolina State in 1998, Whitted was drafted mostly because of his speed. He was a two-time All-American in track, but like many track stars he didn't pan out on the football field.

Whitted finishes his Jaguars career with 17 catches for 215 yards. He had two receptions for 17 yards this season.

“It's unfortunate he was in a situation like the other night,” Jaguars receiver Jimmy Smith said. “He hasn't been in there a lot, and to have to make a play like that under pressure is tough.”

The Jaguars also signed tight end Tevita Ofahengaue to their practice squad. Ofahengaue was the “Mr. Irrelevant” of the 2001 draft, the last player chosen.
