Tight ends in short supply

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

As if the Bengals weren't already thin enough at tight end, Brad St.Louis, who also is the team's long snapper, suffered a left groin injury at practice Wednesday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Jacksonville.

The Bengals have two healthy tight ends on the 53-man roster: converted fullback Nick Williams, who has one game of experience in his new H-back position, and Kirk McMullen, who was signed Tuesday for the second time this season from the practice squad.

The team's top three tight ends from training camp — Tony McGee, Marco Battaglia and rookie Sean Brewer — are out for the season with injuries.

Another new injury Wednesday was the sprained right ankle by wide receiver Danny Farmer, who is listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Strong safety JoJuan Armour has a a sprained left ankle and is probable.

        NO SELLOUT:

Sunday's game is not expected to sell out by 1p.m. today, the deadline that would allow it to be televised live in the Cincinnati market.

        BETTER LATE:

Bengals wide receivers revived a training camp tradition Wednesday when they wore their practice jerseys inside-out in honor of former teammate Malcolm Johnson, who was released last week from the team's practice squad.

        BRUNELL UPDATE:

Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell is listed as questionable for Sunday with a quad injury, but he said he expects to play against the Bengals.

        IRISH EYES:

Jacksonville coach Tom Coughlin addressed rumors that he is in the running for the vacant Notre Dame coaching job.

“I stay focused because I don't let myself be distracted by rumors,” said Coughlin, who is Irish-Catholic and once coached at another Catholic school, Boston College.

Coughlin's Jaguars are 3-8 this season and in last place in the AFC Central, one game behind the fifth-place Bengals.

Bob Davie was fired Sunday by Notre Dame.

        STAT FIX:

Take one of Sunday's six Bengals sacks from Oliver Gibson and give it to Reinard Wilson. Wilson had two of the sacks and Gibson one.

Wilson has five sacks for the year and Gibson three. Wilson is second on the team to linebacker Brian Simmons, who has 5.5.
