Williams may return Sunday

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bengals fullback Nick Williams, who suffered a serious knee ligament injury in the May minicamp, thinks he has a 50-50 chance to play Sunday in a new dual position — fullback/tight end.

Williams has been practicing for the past couple of weeks.

“It's going pretty good,” Williams said of the new position. “It's a little bit of both. In the running game, it's the same (playing fullback). In the passing game, it's different. A lot of the stuff is common sense. It's no major learning situation for me.”

Williams could make his 2001 debut against his former college coach, Butch Davis, who recruited him at Miami (Fla.).

“We're very close friends,” Williams said of Davis, who has led the Browns to a 5-4 record, the same number of wins the expansion team won its first two seasons.

“I knew he would do well,” Williams said. “When he got the job, a couple of people from Cleveland interviewed me, and I said they would win twice as many games this season. It would be nice to see that happen, just not against us.

“Butch, guys like playing for him, as we do for Dick (LeBeau). The man really knows the game.”
