Nov. 1, 1981: Bengals 34, Oilers 21

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

For the first time in eight career games against the Bengals, Houston Oilers tailback Earl Campbell didn't gain 100-plus yards rushing.

Coordinator Hank Bullough's Bengals defense had some help from a tender left hamstring muscle, which Campbell aggravated in the first half, and an efficient Bengals offense that scored 24 consecutive second-quarter points to take a 24-7 halftime lead and make Campbell's return a risk the Oilers couldn't take.

The Bengals' victory lifted them to 6-3 and snapped a six-game losing streak to Campbell's Oilers.

Quarterback Ken Anderson and tight end Dan Ross hooked up on touchdown passes of eight and 14 yards.

Campbell did have a good start, though, gaining 74 yards before his injury.

The victory also began what would go down in Bengals history as the “November to Remember.” They would win five games in a row during the month and average 35.4 points a game.

A Riverfront Stadium crowd of 54,736 watched on Nov. 1, and the Bengals would draw more than 168,000 for their three November home games.
