Young receivers step up

Houshmandzadeh makes first 6 catches of career

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Bengals' young wide receivers may have come of age Sunday in the 30-13 loss to the Jaguars.

Eighth-year veteran Darnay Scott went out with a concussion in the first quarter. He collided face-first with a Jacksonville linebacker and suffered blurred vision and a headache. He is listed as probable for Sunday's game.

In his place, rookie T.J. Houshmandzadeh had his first NFL reception and five more to lead the team with six catches and 62 yards.

“I haven't played in a game for a while. It was fun,” he said. “I don't run wrong routes. I don't mess up like that. That's the quickest way to get out. I was comfortable. I was really comfortable being in there.”

Second-year receiver Peter Warrick had five receptions to bring his team-leading total to 40. His 61 receiving yards give him 395.

Another pair of sophomore wideouts, Ron Dugans and Danny Farmer, had four and three receptions for 51 and 45 yards, respectively.

“At halftime, we looked around and said we had a rookie and three second-year players,” wide receivers coach Steve Mooshagian said. “This is what we got, and we got to go do it. They caught about every ball that was catchable.”

Said quarterback Jon Kitna: “That was some of the positives we are going to take from this game.”
