Isolation Booth
Bengals' Artrell Hawkins Vs. Lions' Johnnie Morton
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bengals right cornerback Artrell Hawkins has earned the praise of coaches and teammates this season for his play, which includes 32 tackles and his first interception in three years.
With the cornerback position ailing, Hawkins will need to have a good game against pass-happy Detroit. The Lions are averaging 260 yards a game in the air, third-best in the NFL.
Hawkins will play opposite Mark Roman, who will make just his fourth NFL start. Behind them, the ranks are thin. The only other healthy corner is Ligarius Jennings, signed Oct. 16 off Detroit's practice squad. Nickel back Tom Carter has been slowed by a knee injury, and Robert Bean is out with a hamstring pull.
Hawkins will face Detroit's leading receiver, Johnnie Morton, who has three 100-yard receiving games so far this year. He has 29 catches for 432 yards and three touchdowns.
Morton also figures to be quarterback Charlie Batch's favorite target today, with fellow receivers Herman Moore and Germane Crowell out for the season with injuries.
The Bengals' pass defense has statistically improved to 13th in the league at 199.2 yards a game, up from 23rd at 222.6 yards allowed per game last season.
