Bengals notebook
LeBeau pays special attention to secondary
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bengals' practice Friday ran about 25 minutes longer than normal, ending at 12:40 p.m. Coach Dick LeBeau wanted to give his patchwork secondary a dress rehearsal for Sunday's game at Detroit.
We've got a young mix, a new mix, in the defensive backfield, and I wanted to give a little more of that situation where they had no huddle and had to get out there and communicate with their teammates, LeBeau said.
The Bengals travel north today with just three healthy cornerbacks starters Artrell Hawkins and Mark Roman and reserve Ligarius Jennings, who was signed Oct.16 off Detroit's practice squad. Robert Bean is out with a hamstring, and Tom Carter was downgraded to questionable with a knee injury.
There's an outside possi bility that free agent Kevin Kaesviharn, signed Tuesday to the practice squad, might be promoted to the 53-man roster and activated in time for Sunday's game. Detroit is a pass-oriented team, and its multiple-receiver sets would force the Bengals to play in their nickel or dime pass coverage.
We're thin, no question about that, LeBeau said. We'll make sure we have enough people.
Safeties Cory Hall and Chris Carter have been working this week at cornerback in case they're needed in an emergency.
READY TO PLAY: Safety Darryl Williams was rested Friday but will play Sunday.
Defensive end Vaughn Booker, who's listed as questionable with an ankle injury, nonetheless did practice Friday and will play a lot, LeBeau said.
GOODBYE: The Washington Redskins on Friday signed rookie offensive lineman Alex Sulfsted off the Bengals' practice squad.
The former Mariemont High School and Miami University star had signed Sept. 4 with the Bengals. A guard, Sulfsted was Kansas City's sixth-round draft pick and was released by the Chiefs on their last cutdown before the season.
Sulfsted will replace backup Washington lineman Mark Fischer, who seriously injured his knee Wednesday and was placed on the injured reserve list Friday, ending his season.
