Lions: Crowell done for year

Receiver to have season-ending surgery

By The Associated Press

PONTIAC, Mich. — Lions receiver Germane Crowell will miss the rest of the season with an injured left knee, compounding problems for the NFL's only winless team.

Crowell will have surgery as soon as Tuesday, Detroit coach Marty Mornhinweg said.

Detroit (0-5) is off to its worst start since 1989. A loss to Cincinnati at home next week would drop the Lions to 0-6 for the first time since 1955.

Crowell tore the patella tendon in his left knee while jumping for a pass in the end zone in Sunday's 27-24 home loss to Tennessee. He caught four passes for 65 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown catch that gave Detroit (0-5) a 14-6 lead in the second quarter.

His injury came just days after receiver Herman Moore was lost for the season with a torn hip muscle.

Crowell caught a career-high nine passes for 125 yards in last week's loss at Minnesota. The fourth-year receiver made 22 receptions for 289 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Crowell, sidelined with a broken left foot for seven games last year, has 166 career catches for 2,521 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is eligible for free agency after the season.

The Lions will look to replace Crowell with receivers Larry Foster, Scotty Anderson and kick-return specialist Desmond Howard, who caught a touchdown pass on Sunday for the first time since 1995.
