Key Matchup

Darnay Scott vs. R.W. McQuarters

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Last week, the Browns defense concentrated on taking wide receiver Darnay Scott out of the Bengals offense.

Scott's only catch was a big one, a 5-yard touchdown from Jon Kitna. Scott also drew a 32-yard pass interference penalty in the second quarter that put the Bengals in scoring position, but Neil Rackers missed a 22-yard field goal.

Scott, who has 17 receptions and a 15.2-yard average, is even more important to the offense this week because rookie speedster Chad Johnson is out. Johnson had established himself as Kitna's go-to guy on third down before breaking his collarbone making a catch last week.

Scott figures to draw the primary attention of one, or both, of Chicago's top two cornerbacks. R.W. McQuarters is Chicago's big-play defensive back. He had a 69-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery last week, and he leads Chicago defensive backs with 24 tackles and five passes defensed. He has scored touchdowns in two of the past five games, returning an interception 61 yards for a touchdown in the last game of the year at Detroit.

The Bears' best cover corner is Walt Harris, in whom the Bengals were interested as a free agent in the offseason. He has 19 tackles but no passes defensed.
