Picking the winners
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Rams keep getting better on offense.
They lead the NFL with 402 yards a game, and their pass production of 298.5 yards also is the league's best.
The high-energy offense begins with quarterback Kurt Warner, who has a 115 passer rating. Tailback Marshall Faulk is the NFL's scrimmage-yards leader.
We know we're in a special place in time, St. Louis coach Mike Martz said after Monday's 35-0 victory at Detroit. We try not to make a big deal out of it. We're trying to make this thing last as long as it can because it's so much fun.
The Giants will play today at St. Louis, where Warner is 16-0 in regular-season and playoff starts.
This week's games:
CARDINALS (1-2) at BEARS (2-1): Oldest NFL rivalry, dates to 7-6 win by Chicago Cardinals over Decatur Staleys (Bears) in 1920. Linebacker Brian Urlacher's 90-yard fumble return for TD last week against Atlanta was second-longest in club history to George Halas' 98-yarder against Jim Thorpe's Oorang Indians in 1923. This year's Bears are plus-4 in turnover differential, Cardinals minus-6. BEARS 27-17.
RAVENS (3-1) at PACKERS (3-1): Game matches Nos. 1 (Baltimore) and 2 defenses in NFL. Ravens' Elvis Grbac has 1,068 passing yards, Green Bay's Brett Favre 1,062. The difference will be Packers running back Ahman Green. PACKERS 17-10.
BRONCOS (3-1) at SEAHAWKS (2-2): The quarterback who gets so overlooked, Trent Dilfer, has won 12 straight starts, including his first with Seattle last week. Denver's Brian Griese has won eight of 10. Past seven meetings between these two teams have been decided by seven or fewer points. BRONCOS 31-21.
LIONS (0-3) at VIKINGS (1-3): Detroit's 20 points are fewest in NFL. Charlie Batch is back at quarterback. Two teams are combined minus-16 in turnovers (minus-9 for Lions). Minnesota QB Daunte Culpepper has 657 yards passing and four touchdowns (two rushing) in past two division home games. VIKINGS 28-9.
DOLPHINS (3-1) at JETS (2-2): New York has won seven in a row from Miami and could match streak set in team's first eight meetings (1966-69). Jets have outscored Dolphins 44-7 in past two fourth quarters. Jets defense last in league at 164 rushing yards a game. DOLPHINS 23-21.
SAINTS (2-1) at PANTHERS (1-3): New Orleans is second with 16 sacks in three games; had 16 sacks in two games against Carolina last season. Ricky Williams running for more than 90 yards a game. SAINTS 27-12.
GIANTS (3-1) at RAMS (4-0): Rams have outscored Giants 69-34 in past two games. Giants won't have home-field emotion on their side this week. RAMS 31-17.
STEELERS (2-1) at CHIEFS (1-3): When Kansas City's Dick Vermeil coached Eagles, he cut Steelers coach Bill Cowher, a former linebacker. Pittsburgh defense has allowed one touchdown in past 10 quarters, to Bengals. Chiefs' weak rush defense in trouble with Jerome Bettis coming to town. STEELERS 16-14.
CHARGERS (3-1) at PATRIOTS (1-3): Natick, Mass., native Doug Flutie will snap Patriots' nine-game win streak against San Diego. Flutie has six TD passes, no interceptions in past games against New England. Rookie tailback LaDainian Tomlinson leads league with 412 rushing yards. CHARGERS 23-16.
49ERS (3-1) at FALCONS (2-2): Michael Vick will start for Atlanta. San Francisco second in league in rushing offense at 151 yards, 38 more than last season. Season series split the past three years. Winning team has scored 30-plus points in 11 of last 14 meetings. 49ERS 31-20.
BUCCANEERS (2-1) at TITANS (0-3): Tampa Bay is 13-7 against AFC under Tony Dungy. QB Brad Johnson has NFC-best 70.1 completion percentage. Tennessee franchise could go 0-4 for first time since it was 1984 Houston Oilers in Warren Moon's first season as NFL quarterback. BUCCANEERS 14-12.
RAIDERS (3-1) at COLTS (2-1): Oakland scored 31 straight points to overcome 31-7 deficit last year at Indy and win, only one of three losses in past 17 home games for Colts. Colts are minus-7 in turnovers; Peyton Manning has thrown seven interceptions. Still, Indianapolis leads NFL with 33.3 points a game. COLTS 33-30.
REDSKINS (0-4) at COWBOYS (0-4): Combined 0-8 record is worst ever on Monday night. But parallel downfalls in rivalry still should make game entertaining. Dallas win would be 35th on Monday night, tying Miami and San Francisco for most. Difference will be Emmitt Smith's and Cowboys' ability to run the ball. COWBOYS 17-13.
BILLS (0-4) at JAGUARS (2-2) Thursday night: Jacksonville wide receivers Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell each reached 500 career receptions in loss at Seattle. Passing matchup favors Jacksonville offense over Buffalo's defense. JAGUARS 20-13.
BROWNS (3-1) at BENGALS (2-2): Bengals 17, Browns 16
LAST WEEK: 10-5. OVERALL: 37-21.
