Smith launches career at practice

Bengals Notebook

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bengals defensive end Justin Smith practiced for the first time Wednesday since ending his holdout Saturday.

“He was a little jumpy,” defensive line coach Tim Krumrie said of Smith. “It's just a matter of repetition. He got quite a few (repetitions) today.”

Smith played on the second-team defense Wednesday.

QB DERBY: Scott Mitchell returned to practice Wednesday and appeared to reclaim his place as second-string quarterback.

Mitchell worked with the second-team offense, behind starter Jon Kitna. Akili Smith was the quarterback on the scout-team offense, which ran the Tennessee Titans' offense against the Bengals' top defenders.

INJURY REPORT: Guard Victor Leyva is out of Sunday's game with an ankle injury. Defensive end Vaughn Booker (thigh) is questionable.

Four players are probable: running back Brandon Bennett (shoulder), wide receiver Danny Farmer (abdomen), wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (foot) and linebacker Takeo Spikes (shoulder).

STAT PACK: It's only one week, but the Bengals have several players atop the AFC rankings, where last year they often were at the bottom.

Kicker Neil Rackers is third in the AFC with 11 points. Quarterback Jon Kitna has the sixth-best passer rating at 101.5. Peter Warrick is tied for third with seven receptions. Curtis Keaton is first in kickoff returns with a 36.4-yard average.
