Preseason passes without Smith
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Justin Smith holdout passed 41 days Wednesday with no apparent end in sight.
We told him we'd take a look at things and get back to him tomorrow, Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said Wednesday night. We spoke today. There's really nothing to report.
Smith, the defensive end from Missouri, will have missed all five weeks of training camp and all four preseason games. The final exhibition is tonight against Indianapolis.
Though agent Jim Steiner removed the demand for guaranteed money from his Monday proposal, Blackburn said the offer made negotiations lose ground.
The Bengals are worried about inflated salaries in the last years of the six-year proposal.
Smith is the last draft pick unsigned. A phone message left for Steiner in his St. Louis office Wednesday was not returned.
