Bengals pick up LB Moore

Hope troubled Ex-Bill can boost pass rush

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The Bengals, looking for ways to pump up their pass rush, claimed former Buffalo linebacker Corey Moore on waivers Thursday.

Moore set a Big East record with 17 sacks in 1999 at Virginia Tech. Moore is listed as a linebacker and is 5-foot-11, 225 pounds.

“We've seen him play. We like his speed. We think he's got a chance to be a top-flight (speed) pass rusher,” coach Dick LeBeau said. “If he can get to the quarterback, we'll have a spot for him.”

Moore, 24, struggled in Buffalo's training camp, where new coach Gregg Williams moved him from inside to outside linebacker and called him a disappointment on special teams. He was the Bills' third-round pick in the 2000 draft and played in nine games with one sack.

He missed some voluntary workouts this summer after being shot in the leg June 1 in his hometown of Brownsville, Tenn. Police there say he was sitting at a traffic light between 2-3a.m. when a car pulled up beside him and a man got out, walked to the driver's-side window and shot Moore in the leg.

Police say there is no motive. At the time of the shooting, Moore had an aggravated assault charge against him pending in Haywood (Tenn.) County General Court that stemmed from a May 15 incident in which a man was hit with a beer bottle. That charge was dropped June 25 when the man refused to testify against Moore.

Moore was one of 10 players released Wednesday by the Bills. He will report to the Bengals today.

If Moore makes the team, the Bengals will assume his $298,000 salary.
