Bengals Notebook

Keaton leads backfield with 87 yards

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CHICAGO — The competition at running back heated up in the preseason opener Saturday night, with Curtis Keaton, Michael Basnight and rookie Rudi Johnson each making bids for roster spots.

Keaton, the team's second-round draft choice in 2000, followed up his impressive scrimmage with an 87-yard, 16-carry effort to lead a Bengals rushing game that went for 231 yards.

“I'm trying to make a statement,” Keaton said. “I'm sore. That's the most I've played since college.”

Coach Dick LeBeau rested Corey Dillon, and the team's franchise running back might not play until the third preseason game Aug. 25 at home against Buffalo.

Resting Dillon gave the other running backs a chance to run.

Johnson rushed 13 times for 52 yards, and Basnight ran nine times for 35 yards. Brandon Bennett, who was solid as the team's top backup to Dillon last year, rushed three times for 19 yards but lost a fumble.

INJURY REPORT: Marco Battaglia (knee), Freddie Moore (knee) and Nick Williams (knee) are out for Friday's game in Detroit. Kevin Henry (elbow) and Sean Brewer (hamstring) are questionable. Takeo Spikes is probable after twisting his right ankle in Chicago.

SACK PACK: The Bengals recorded three sacks, by Jevon Langford, Mark Roman and Tony Williams. Roman led the Bengals with seven tackles.

ROUGH DEBUT: In his first pro game, rookie guard Victor Leyva was called for two holding penalties, one of which was declined by the Bears.
