Bengals' 6th-rounder signs

Johnson to fight for playing time at linebacker

By Malcolm C. Knox
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Sixth-round draft pick Riall Johnson signed a three-year deal with the Bengals on Wednesday. Dollar figures were not available.

The deal for right tackle Victor Leyva, the fifth-rounder who signed Tuesday, was worth just more than $1 million over three years, agent Ken Zuckerman said.

Johnson, 6 feet, 3 inches, 243 pounds, played defensive end and outside linebacker for Stanford. He recorded 15 sacks, a tie for the most in the nation, last season. He is the only Pacific 10 player to lead the conference in sacks in consecutive years.

Johnson is the second of the Bengals' draft picks to complete a deal. He will play outside linebacker for the Bengals but might move around, linebackers coach Mark Duffner said.

Playing the same position as Takeo Spikes and Steve Foley doesn't look good for Johnson's playing time. Spikes has had more than 100 tackles in each of his three seasons as a Bengal. Foley, who led the nation in sacks as a collegian at Northeast Louisiana, started in all 32 of the Bengals' regular-season games the past two years and has had at least 3.5 sacks in each of those two years.

“(Johnson) will dictate (playing time) by what he does when we get the pads on,” Duffner said. “So far he's competed very favorably, but we've had on shorts and T-shirts.

“He was a very physical and active player at Stanford. He's very serious about being a good ball player.”
