Scott still no-show at Bengals' workouts
By Mark Curnutte and Malcolm C. Knox
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bengals wide receiver Darnay Scott was a no-show for the fourth straight day Thursday at the voluntary veterans workout at Paul Brown Stadium.
But wide receivers coach Steve Mooshagian said he is confident Scott will be here Tuesday for the final three days of workouts.
I didn't think he'd come in (Thursday from his St. Louis home) because we've got four days off, Mooshagian said.
Scott, a six-year veteran and a key to reviving a pass offense that ranked last in the NFL in 2000, had said he would be here all week for workouts.
A man identifying himself as Scott's uncle answered the phone at Scott's St. Louis home Wednesday and said the receiver would be in Cincinnati today to participate.
Coaches wanted Scott here to continue to strengthen the leg he broke Aug.1 at training camp. He fractured the tibia and fibula in his left leg and missed the season.
Scott had run pass patterns with quarterbacks during informal workouts throughout April, then participated in mandatory minicamp May 4-7.
The Bengals have three more voluntary veteran workouts scheduled, Tuesday through Thursday next week, before training camp opens July 20 at Georgetown, Ky.
I'm more concerned with what he does in June to get in shape, Mooshagian said. If he comes in 205 (pounds), we're going to have to spend the first few days getting him into top shape. If he's 199-200, we can get right into the offense.
Scott, who will turn 29 in July, is listed on the depth chart oppo site Peter Warrick as the Bengals' starting receivers.
His speed was such an issue when we lost him last year, Mooshagian said. It's not as big an issue this year because we added Chad (Johnson, the second-round pick from Oregon State) and our guys are one year better.
