Bengals Notebook

Dugans fighting for a job

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ron Dugans is fighting for a job, and he knows his status as the Bengals' third-round draft pick in 2000 is no guarantee.

Dugans, a wide receiver from Florida State, started the first five games as a rookie -- opposite college teammate Peter Warrick.

And while he finished with 14 receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown, Dugans fell on the depth chart and was inactive for two games. Danny Farmer, another 2000 rookie, replaced Dugans in the lineup.

Dugans, who was unsigned and missed some training camp, also was hampered by a hamstring injury for part of the season.

This year is a new one. Dugans has looked quicker and faster during workouts.

“Some people might say, "You got drafted. You got it made,' but I'm fighting for a job,” he said.

The Bengals drafted two wide receivers from the same school for the second consecutive year, taking former Oregon State teammates Chad Johnson (second round) and T.J. Houshmandzedah (seventh).

The Bengals are trying to upgrade what was the NFL's worst pass offense, which was 30 yards a game less productive than 30th-ranked Cleveland.

ROOKIE POOL: The Bengals have not had any significant contract discussions with their seven draft choices, including top pick Justin Smith.

Top team officials won't even be in the office this week. They are in suburban Chicago at the NFL spring meeting until Friday.

VET WORKOUTS: Wide receiver Darnay Scott, who is coming back from a broken leg during training camp, didn't participate in the voluntary veteran workout Monday, a team spokesman said.
