Browns won't bid for Dillon

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Contract negotiations between Corey Dillon's agent and Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn could begin as early as today.

“A time is set, but we're not saying when,” Blackburn said Wednesday. “It's in ac cordance with their wishes. We want to be as productive as possible.”

There had been some question whether Leigh Steinberg or David Dunn was flying to Cincinnati. A secretary in the office of Steinberg, Moorad and Dunn in Newport Beach, Calif., said Dunn would be repre senting Dillon.

Another sign Wednesday pointed to Dillon signing in Cincinnati. The only other team that had shown much interest, the Cleveland Browns, will not pursue the Pro Bowl running back.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Browns football operations director Dwight Clark saying “I think we've decided to move on” from making a bid for Dillon.

“It's a combination of everything, what we know about our players, plus what we know about Corey,” Clark told the paper.

Coach Butch Davis said he plans to proceed with running backs Errict Rhett, Travis Prentice and rookie James Jackson.

Dillon had told members of Cincinnati's media Monday that he wanted his agent and Bengals officials to begin serious negotiations by Friday.
