New fullback begins workouts

Neal excited about blocking for Dillon

Lorenzo Neal's whirlwind visit to Cincinnati continued Tuesday morning when he signed a two-year contract and participated in morning workouts with other veteran players at Paul Brown Stadium.

Neal, 30, considered one of the NFL's best blocking fullbacks, also appeared headed into a pickup basketball game with Corey Dillon.

Neal blocked for Eddie George last year in Tennessee and wants to do the same this season for Dillon, who remains an unsigned free agent.

“He's a future Hall of Famer,” Neal said Tuesday. “I'm just grateful to be here and have the opportunity to block for him.”

Neal is impressed not only with Dillon but with quarterback Jon Kitna, the offensive line and the corps of young wide receivers headed by Peter Warrick.

“I really believe Cincinnati is not going to be the doormat this year,” Neal said. “You can get a sense of the changes taking place here. Coach (Dick) LeBeau was straight-up with me. He said he urgently wants to win here. Anybody who isn't with his program won't be here.”

Bengals president Mike Brown, who watched the veteran workout from the sidelines, was pleased with the acquisitions of Neal and left tackle Richmond Webb.

“They're people who will help us,” Brown said. “You have to see how it will work out. We're not going to sit here and brag. We're trying to get it set up as good as we possibly can.”

Running backs coach Jim Anderson likes how Neal knows what his job is.

“He is a blue-collar player who's fully aware he's not going to run the ball,” Anderson said. “He'll touch the ball a couple times a game, but he knows he is here to block.”

ROSTER TRIM: The Bengals waived offensive lineman Craig Heimburger, who was signed to the Bengals' 53-man roster in December but was inactive the final two games.

WORKOUTS: Veterans will continue to participate in voluntary workouts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the rest of May.
