Bengals Notebook
Jackson 'welcomes' Smith to NFL
No. 1 draft pick Justin Smith and 14-year veteran John Jackson cam e to blows in a red-zone drill in Sunday afternoon's practice.
They got locked up on a pass play and Jackson wrestled Smith to the ground. Smith shoved Jackson, and Jackson took at least two swings at Smith's helmet.
It was a good day of practice, a good day, said Smith. Everything is left on the field, so it's no big deal.
Jackson said, It's nothing personal. It's just when I get out there I get a short fuse.
ACHES AND PAINS: Quarterback Akili Smith, tight end Marco Battaglia and left tackle Richmond Webb were held out of the afternoon practice with minor injuries. Battaglia has a thigh bruise, and Smith's right shoulder was sore.
BROWN'S TAKE: Brown likes what he has seen in the three minicamp practices.
We're bringing in a lot of new things here, not just players but systems, he said. There are a lot of changes going on. When you have that, you can look rough at first before they smooth out. Our guys are working hard. They're showing a good spirit.
THE RETURN: Linebacker Brian Simmons, who is coming back from a serious knee ligament injury in last season's opener, intercepted a pass and chased down a ball carrier from across the field.
