Bengals Notebook

Spikes will miss minicamp

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bengals linebacker Takeo Spikes, who had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder, won't be cleared to participate until June 1, which means he will miss minicamp and voluntary workouts until then.

Defensive tackle Tom Barndt, who also had shoulder surgery, won't be able to practice, either, but is expected to be cleared June 1.

Middle linebacker Brian Simmons, who hasn't played since tearing knee cartilage in the opener against Cleveland last season, has been cleared to practice for the first time.

TOP DOWN: Top draft pick Justin Smith will report Friday, even though he remains unsigned.

“Everybody's waiting for Vick to sign,” Smith said of top pick Michael Vick, the former Virginia Tech quarterback who's with the Atlanta Falcons. “Then everybody else will fall into place.”

Smith is living in his Columbia, Mo., apartment and working out twice a day at the University of Missouri athletic complex. He has said he will not hold out because he doesn't want to miss any of training camp.

EUROPEAN HOME: Several players on the Bengals roster are playing in NFL Europe.

Fullback Ricky Brown, who plays for Berlin, helped the Thunder to a 28-20 victory over Frankfurt with a 32-yard touchdown run last weekend.

Safety Gary Thompkins played for Frankfurt.

Guard Anthony Byrd started for Amsterdam in a 14-10 victory over Scotland. Tight end Kirk McMullen also played for Amsterdam.

Bengals linebacker/safety JoJuan Armour, who played college ball at Miami, is on the Barcelona roster but has not played because of an injury.
