Bengals lock up defensive lineman Henry

Former Steeler can play end or tackle

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Former Steelers defensive lineman Kevin Henry, who agreed to terms late Friday with the Bengals, gives the team more depth but no more pass rush.

Henry, who will be 33 Oct.23, played for Bengals coach Dick LeBeau when Le Beau was Pittsburgh's defensive coordinator. Henry had 46 tackles last season, but he had only one sack in the past two seasons.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Henry played college ball at Mississippi State.

“He's a lot like guys we have already,” said Jim Lippincott, Bengals director of pro/college personnel. “He works hard. He knows the system because he played in it in Pittsburgh. He's started in this league, and that counts for a lot.”

LeBeau reportedly pushed for Henry's deal and compares him to Oliver Gibson, another former Steelers lineman who is the Bengals' best defensive tackle.

Henry, like the Bengals' other ends, Vaughn Booker and John Copeland, can play either end or tackle.

Copeland probably will move back to end this season after playing tackle much of last year.

The Bengals are still going to try to sign former Redskins tackle Dana Stubblefield, the former Taylor High School star.

Henry, when he signs, will be the Bengals' third free-agent pickup of the year, joining defensive tackle Tony Williams and quarterback Jon Kitna.
