Browns talk to Dillon

Team unlikely to make any moves before April draft

Enquirer news services

PALM DESERT, Calif. — Don't expect Bengals running back Corey Dillon to be part of the Cleveland Browns' immediate future.

Even though Browns director of football operations Dwight Clark made preliminary contact with Dillon's agent Monday on the first day of the NFL's annual meetings, Clark and team president Carmen Policy said that nothing will happen with Dillon — if at all — until the draft April 21-22.

“This is an issue, I think that will be on our plate through the month of April,” Policy said.

Coach Butch Davis, though, did not seem to give a ringing endorsement when asked if he'd like to talk to Dillon.

        “It's possible,” Davis said. “I don't know.”

First, Davis wants to evaluate the draft. He said when he and Clark return from the league's annual gathering, they'll spend one day — 12-to-14 hours — evaluating each position. Running back will be studied first.

“I want to get a great feel for how much depth there is in the draft, who might be there in the third round and weigh that vs. what's on the market,” Davis said.

If the Browns like Mississippi's Deuce McAlister or TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, they probably will pass on Dillon. If they don't, or if there are questions, they will bring Dillon in for a visit shortly before or after the draft.
