Bengals turn focus to DE

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bengals' free agent odyssey shifts focus today and Friday to one of their weakest positions, defensive end.

Titans defensive end Kenny Holmes will come in today with Ravens center Jeff Mitchell, and Arizona defensive end Simeon Rice will visit Friday with Dallas wide receiver James McKnight.

The Bengals had only 26 sacks last season and were last in the league in sacks per defensive play. Only 10 of the sacks were by defensive linemen.

Holmes had nine sacks last season for the Titans and has 22.5 sacks in four NFL seasons. Rice had 7.5 sacks last season, down from 16.5 in 1999.

The Bengals also envision Dana Stubblefield, who visited Wednesday, as a defensive end. He had 15 sacks in 1997 when he was NFL Defensive Player of the Year for San Francisco.

Stubblefield, who was supposed to solidify the Redskins' defensive line with former Bengal Dan Wilkinson when the two tackles were acquired in 1998, never approached his previous standing.

Two offensive linemen, center Casey Weigmann of the Bears and guard Ross Verba of the Packers, will visit Monday.
