Anderson wants raise to move for Searcy

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Willie Anderson, the Bengals starting right tackle, could be a factor in the Bengals' attempts to sign right tackle Leon Searcy, who visited Cincinnati on Tuesday.

The former Jacksonville Jaguar said he could not play left tackle, a Bengals weak spot, suggesting Anderson move to the left. Anderson said Tuesday night he would want $2 million a year more than the six-year, $30.5 million deal he signed in May to move to the left side.

“I'm grateful for my contract,” Anderson said. “But I'd be underpaid on the left side.”

Anderson said he was encouraged by news that the Bengals had made the highest bid, though a losing one, for free agent quarterback Elvis Grbac.

“That's big. Mike Brown always said he would use revenue from the new stadium to attract big-name guys,” Anderson said.

Grbac, who visited Cincin nati on Sunday, signed in Baltimore at about 5 p.m., but he called Anderson only hours before to ask about the Bengals.

“I really wanted him to come,” Anderson said of Grbac.

The Bengals had not started negotiating with Searcy as of late Tuesday.
