Basnight signs one-year deal

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Running back Michael Basnight, who missed the 2000 NFL season with a broken wrist, signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Bengals.

Basnight, a two-year pro, was an exclusive-rights free agent who accepted the Bengals tender offer, 110 percent (or $389,000) of his 2000 contract.

Basnight will be 100 percent healthy in four weeks, said Jim Lippincott, Bengals director of pro/college personnel.

VISITORS: Former Buffalo defensive tackle Ted Washington will visit the Bengals on Monday. Might defensive end John Randle, who will be released today by Minnesota, be the next to come to town?

Randle, 33, had two years left on a five-year, $32.5 million contract and was set to make $5.5 million in each of the next two seasons. He had a team-high eight sacks last season, and the Bengals have said they would like to improve their pass rush with a veteran.

But Bengals officials declined comment about Randle until his release becomes official.

TE SIGNS: Tight end Jason Gavadza, who played at Kent State, has signed with the Bengals.

Gavadza was the sixth-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000 but was cut in training camp. He spent the season on practice squads in Tennessee, Carolina, Green Bay and Baltimore.

        Gavadza, 25, is 6-foot-3, 245 pounds.

TAKING A LOOK: Stephen Jones, the Dallas Cowboys' executive vice president of player personnel, and other team officials toured Paul Brown Stadium.

The Tuesday visit was part of a continuing note-taking tour of new NFL stadiums by the Cowboys, who are hoping to replace or renovate Texas Stadium, Cowboys public relations director Rich Dalrymple said Wednesday.

The Cowboys want team offices to be in the new stadium, which is the case in Cincinnati and Carolina. Jones, the son of team owner Jerry Jones, also has toured stadiums in Baltimore, Tampa and Nashville when the Cowboys played in those cities, Dalrymple said.
