Agent: Akili realizes he made mistake
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Leigh Steinberg, Akili Smith's agent, said the Bengals quarterback realizes he made a mistake after his arrest for drunken driving.
Akili understands to get in the car after drinking any alcohol is wrong and dangerous, Steinberg said. He realizes this cannot happen again.
Smith was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street in his hometown of San Diego. He's scheduled to appear in court March 2.
Steinberg said there are no plans to put Smith in a treatment program.
The NFL already deals with players involved in alcohol incidents, Steinberg said.
An NFL spokesman said players can be fined up to $20,000 for an alcohol-related conviction.
Smith was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving in February 1999 in Eugene, Ore. But he was found to be under the legal limit.
