Smith suspected of DUI

QB arrested after going wrong way on 1-way street

The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Akili Smith, the Cincinnati Bengals' second-year quarterback, was arrested Thursday for investigation of drunken driving.

Smith, the third overall pick in the 1999 draft, was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street in the downtown Gaslamp Quarter at about 2a.m., police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Smith told the officer he was looking for friends.

Smith, who lives in San Diego, was given a sobriety test and booked into San Diego County jail, Robinson said. He later was released on $1,600 bail.

“If the information is accurate, this is a matter that Akili will have to handle with the proper authorities,” Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said.

“It is the club's policy not to comment further on legal charges until such matters are resolved in the courts.”

Smith lost his starting job to Scott Mitchell after the 10th game last season, when the Bengals finished 4-12 for the second straight season.

The Bengals were 2-8 with Smith as the starter.

Smith is the third Bengal involved in a court case in the past month.

On Wednesday, defensive back Tremain Mack was released from serving one month in jail in Cincinnati for violating his probation on drunken driving convictions.

Mack was convicted of drunken driving in 1997 and 1998, resulting in jail sentences and an eight-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

His driver's license also was suspended and he was prohibited from driving. WLWT-TV (Channel 5) filmed him driving in November, a violation that resulted in the one-month jail stay.

Running back Corey Dillon agreed last month to contribute $750 to a women's shelter and undergo treatment to settle a domestic violence charge in suburban Seattle.

Dillon, who lives in Seattle, had been charged with fourth-degree assault for striking his wife in August.
